Intel Core i3 Vs i5 Vs i7

Intel Core i3 Vs i5 Vs i7

Intel has now announced its new processor lines which are the core i3, core i5 and core i7 processors. I present an Intel core i3 vs i5 vs i7 comparison here for your perusal.

If you are planning to buy a new desktop or laptop, you will notice the names of three new Intel created processor lines named core i3, core i5, and core i7 in the specifications. If you are undecided on whether to opt for the old core 2 duo models or go for these new lines, this article might help you decide. After reading through this article, you won't feel the need to make an Intel core i3 vs core 2 duo comparison. So how do the i3, i5 and i7 lines differ and what more do they offer compared to the older core 2 duo lines? That is what I explain through the core i3 vs core i5 vs core i7 comparison presented here.

Intel Core i3 Vs i5 Vs i7

Intel Core i3 Vs i5 Vs i7 Comparison

Intel has presented the new hierarchy of its processors with three classes. The entry level processors are the core i3 series, mid level processors are core i5 series and high end ones are the core i7 processors. Let us see how these three processor lines differ in terms of technical specifications and performance.

Core i3 Vs i5 Vs i7: Technical Specifications
Let us begin with the core i3 line. Core i3 5xx (Clarkdale) series launched in January 2010 consists of three processors (i3-530, i3-540 and i3-550) with a clocking frequency ranging from 2933 MHz to 3200 MHz. All three processors have a 2x256 KB L2 cache, 4MB L3 smart cache with DMI (direct media interface) bus and are fitted with the new LGA 1156 socket. All three processors have two cores and an integrated GPU (Graphic Processing Unit) and are based on a 32 nm architecture which enables more transistors to be placed on a chip compared to the earlier 45 nm architecture.

The processors have two cores and four threads backed by Intel's hyperthreading and virtualization technology that enhances the multitasking ability of these chips. Hyperthreading is simultaneous multithreading ability. The Intel HD graphics technology offers great visual performance. All in all, the core i3 series is a great entry level chip that offers all that a home user needs including high quality 3D graphics and great multitasking ability. The price for all the chips is around $133. Other than these processors Intel has developed i3, i5 and i7 lines for mobile phones too.

Now let us move to the second part of our core i3 vs i5 vs i7 comparison and discuss the core i5 line of processors. This family of processors consists of three lines of processors which include the core i5 7xx, core i5 7xxS and core i5 6xx series. They have processor clocking frequencies ranging from 2.4 GHz to 3.33 GHz which can be enhanced by Intel's new Turbo Boost technology. Some processors have 4 cores with 4 threads (core i5-7xx and core i5-7xxS Lynnfield series) and some with 2 cores and 4 threads (core i5- 6xx Clarkdale Series with hyperthreading disabled). Most have an 8MB L3 cache, with LGA 1156 socket, direct media interface and integrated GPU. All are enabled with Intel Turbo Boost technology, Intel HD graphics and Intel Smart Cache technology. Prices range from $176 to $256. Core i5 have the edge over the core i3 processors in terms of the Turbo Boost technology that makes them faster and powerful.

Let us now move towards the last part of the intel core i3 vs i5 vs i7 comparison and discuss the core i7 processor family. The core i7 family of processors are built to outperform. They consist of eight different series of processors. Dubbed by Intel to be 'The Best Processors On the Planet', these are quad core processors with 8 threads with clocking frequencies touching 3.06 GHz which can be enhanced to 3.33 GHz with Intel's Turbo Boost and Hyperthreading Technology.

With 8 MB of smart cache which reaches 12 MB in the Gulftown line, these processors are nothing short of phenomenal. With 3 channels of DDR3 1066 MHz memory that is backed by an integrated memory controller and Intel's QuickPath Interconnect technology (that enables upto 25.6 GB/Sec of data transfer speed), the core i7 processors are simply unbeatable. The prices range from $320 to $1000.

Core i3 Vs i5 Vs i7: Performance
In terms of performance, if you make a core i3 vs i5 vs i7 comparison, the graph rises higher as you go from the i3 line, through the i5 line towards the core i7 line. Core i3 is a great entry level processor that offers high definition graphics and 3D capabilities and ensures that multitasking wouldn't take a toll on computer speed. This is the default pick for home users with desktop computers.

The core i5 line is speedier and more powerful than the i3 line offering all that the i3 series offers and yet goes beyond in terms of performance. The Turbo Boost technology along with hyperthreading technology enables two different tasks to be handled by two different processors which increases processing speed. They are the best processors for laptops with a high level of multitasking needs.

A core i5 vs core i7 comparison reveals that the i7 lines are simply miles ahead of the two other processor lines. The i3 vs i5 vs i7 benchmark tests reveal core i7 processors to be the clear winners. The i7 line has an inherent advantage provided by the four cores. A quad core vs dual core comparison will reveal the edge that more cores give a processor. You can develop 3D games and images, go for video editing and get an unparalleled gaming experience. Core i7 line places phenomenal computing power at your fingertips.

Hope this straightforward core i3 vs i5 vs i7 comparison has cleared any doubts you had about these new processor lines developed by Intel. Opt for core i3 processors if you are a home user with graphic intensive application usage and mainly multimedia use. Core i5 processors are for people who want to go for intensive gaming and run heavy programs. The top of the line core i7 processors are best for people who want to go for intensive multitasking and are designed for computers that have to function as web servers or database servers, video editing workstations or developer workstations. They are designed for business use. However, all depends on how much are you willing to pay for a new laptop or desktop. If you can afford it, why not go for a top of the line processor of the core i7 line? The decision is yours of course. Choose any processor from any line but my personal recommendation would be to go for the mid level core i5 series, which is cost effective, reasonably priced and offers real value for your money!

10 reasons why PCs crash U must Know

10 reasons why PCs crash U must Know

Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy," it says. "Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications."

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow '!' appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.

These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.

If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card's manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.

6 Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.

A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file. DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus software manufacturer.

An excellent antivirus programme is McAfee VirusScan by Network Associates ( www.nai.com). Another is Norton AntiVirus 2000, made by Symantec ( www.symantec.com).

7 Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer's performance.

If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer's default settings and you may be able to carry on.

8 Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don't do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.org

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message "Starting Windows" press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn't work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

9 Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from www.computernerd.com or www.coolit.com

CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.

10 Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut will cause any unsaved data to be lost.

Aircel Pocket Internet settings for configuring PC / Laptop

Aircel Pocket Internet settings for configuring PC / Laptop

This post explains you on how to use the Aircel Pocket Internet on your PC / Laptop.For using Aircel Pocket Internet on PC / Laptop , you need a mobile phone which has USB or bluetooth to connect to the PC / laptop. I’ll explain this using the options I have on my previous mobile phone – Sony Ericsson K750i.
I have a Nokia 5800 too which I have successfully connected to PC and browsed using Aircel Pocket internet.Get Aircel Pocket Internet active on your mobile. Once you subscribe, you will receive settings to use it which need to be saved on the mobile phone. On SE K750i, you can see these profiles under Settings > Connectivity > Internet Settings , you may see a number of profiles listed along with “pocket internet” itself. “Pocket Internet” is the profile used to connect to internet and browse on PC / Laptop. Find at what position, “Pocket Internet” profile is listed on the above said section, if its at serial number 1, it is 1. This position is used in the dial up number configured on the PC / laptop.
Connect your mobile phone to PC / Laptop. As said earlier, use USB cable or use bluetooth and make sure it is connected.
Create a new dial up connection (Go to control panel, network and internet connection > Network connections and choose create a new connection). Name it as “Aircel” or something (name isn’t very much dependant). Choose to set up the connection manually and choose dial up modem. For the dial up modem, keep username and password as blank and the number to dial is *99***1# (if pocket internet is your first profile – see explanation above), or *99***2# if pocket internet is listed as the second profile and so on. Create connection and dial the connection, you should see a status bar indicating that connection is established on successful connection.
Now open your web browser (say IE), go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN settings and enter the proxy details as 192.168.35.201 and port 8081 , use this proxy for other protocols too.
Now open any page say http://www.google.com/ the page should load if you have followed the instructions as stated above.
The procedure will be almost similar on other mobile phones too, one need to identify the internet profiles listed on the phone, identify the position of the “pocket Internet” settings, create the dial up number accordingly, use the proxy on the browser. It should work on any mobile phone which allows connection to PC / laptop.

shtcut to restarting xp..
You can restart a Windows XP Pro and Home machine easily by creating a shortcut with following path. (Assume you installed Windows XP on your C: Partition) "c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -r -f -t 00" -r is for restarting the computer. -f is to force close all programs without saving. -t 00 is used to restart in zero seconds. i.e. as soon as you D.Click on the shortcut. You can log off from a Windows XP Professional or Home edition by running "C:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -l -f -t 00". Also you can shutdown a Windows XP Home or Professional edition by running "c:\windows\system32\shutdown.exe -s -f -t 00". You always have to turn from the CPU after running this command. (Same with AT and ATX powered machines.) If you want to turn down power of ATX machine automatically, run "c:\windows\system32\tsshutdn.exe 00 /POWERDOWN /DELAY:00" This is used to turn off a server. Even though your computer will be
shutdown completely, this whole operation will take 30 seconds to finish. Even though you don't have networked computers attached to your computer, this works.
1) Disabling Display of Drives in My Computer :
This is yet another trick you can play on your geek friend. To disable the display of local or networked drives when you click My Computer go to : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Now in the right pane create a new DWORD item and name it NoDrives. Now modify it's value and set it to 3FFFFFF (Hexadecimal) Now press F5 to refresh. When you click on My Computer, no drives will be shown. To enable display of drives in My Computer, simply delete this DWORD item. It's .reg file is as follows: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore r] "NoDrives"=dword:03ffffff
2) Pop a banner each time Windows Boots :
To pop a banner which can contain any message you want to display just before a user is going to log on, go to the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WinLogon Now create a new string Value in the right pane named LegalNoticeCaption and enter the value that you want to see in the Menu Bar. Now create yet another new string value and name it: LegalNoticeText. Modify it and insert the message you want to display each time Windows boots. This can be effectively used to display the company's private policy each time the user logs on to his NT box. It's .reg file would be: REGEDIT4 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] "LegalNoticeCaption"="Caption here."
3) Great trick Lock ur PC yourself
lock ur pc.. open notepad copy and paste the script below and save it .VBS extention
This wil create a shortcut.. run(click) it
set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
set oShellLink = WshShell.CreateShortcut(wshShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop") & "\LockWorkstation.lnk")
oShellLink.TargetPath = "%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe"
oShellLink.Arguments = "user32.dll,LockWorkStation"
oShellLink.Save
first select a folder for example i'll use a folder name movies in D drive D:\movies\
in the same drive u create a text file and type
ren movies movies.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}
and save it as loc.bat
again u type in a notepad as
ren movies.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} movies
and save it as key.bat
now in D drive u can see two batch files loc and key.. when u double click loc the movie folder will change to control panel and whn u double click key the control panel will change to normal folder..
there are two more different tricks in dis site to lock ur pc down in a unique ways.. donno where i have typed it.. !!!
4) Deleting System Options from the Start menu :
You can actually remove the Find and Run options from the start menu by performing a simple registry hack. Again like always Launch the registry editor and scroll down to the below key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Right-click on the right pane and select New, DWORD Value. Name it NoFind.(To remove the RUN option name it NoRun). Double-click the newly create DWORD to edit it's value and enter 1 as its value. This will disable the FIND option of the Start Menu and will also disable the default Shortcut key(F3 for Find.) To restore the Run or find command modify the value of the DWORD to 0 or simply Delete the DWORD value.
5) Cleaning Recent Docs Menu and the RUN MRU :
The Recent Docs menu can be easily disabled by editing the Registry. To do this go to the following Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Now in the right pane, create a new DWORD value by the name: NoRecentDocsMenu and set it's value to 1. Restart Explorer to save the changes. You can also clear the RUN MRU history. All the listings are stored in the key: HKEY_USERS\.Default\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMR U You can delete individual listings or the entire listing. To delete History of Find listings go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Doc Find Spec MRU and delete
6) Can u Delete Recycle Bin?
1 thing is 4 sure, delete option can be added 2 recycle bin...
the old registry thing will work out.....
* launch d registry...
* open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}\ShellFolder
* to add a rename and delete option, change the Dword attribute to 70 01 00 20
* refresh and reboot the system..... u r done.
PS: always backup ur data as well as registry b4 attempting 2 work on it if u r a newbie....
7) To change the icons used for specific drives in explorer
Open regedit by typing regedit into start->run
then navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer
now create a key(KEY not VALUE!!) called DriveIcons under Explorer...
now within DriveIcons, create another key with the drive letter you want to change (e.g.,HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\K)...
create another key within the drive letter key called DefaultIcon...
now set the default String value equal to the icon you want to use. if you have a file that has more than one icon in it, such as a DLL file, use the standard
C:\full_path\icon_file.dll,n <file:///C:/full_path/icon_file.dll,n>) where n is the number of the icon within the file icon_file.dll...
~ c h e e r s! ~
More
change drive icons.....
first of all copy a icon file to the root of the drive.
example: c:\icon.ico
then create a file called: autorun.inf in c:\autorun.inf
then open that file and type the following:
[autorun]
icon=icon.ico
save and close the file.
now open my computer and resfresh.. and woh! icon changed....
you can apply to other drives too.
be carefull:
"autorun.inf" and "ico.ico" must be in the root of the drive.
example: c:\autorun.inf and c:\icon.ico.
same on the root.
ENJOY, this works on 98 too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8) Hacking windows SEND TO MENU
I know this is a very simple thing but the problem, as like many other issues, is the ignorance about it.
How often do you copy songs from a CD? Or some photos from a CD?
What do you do? You select the required files and do a CTRL –C. Open the destination folder and do a CTRL-V. Here is something you can benefit time from. Customize your SEND TO MENU.
This sounds simple and you can do it in less than sixty seconds.
You can create your own BASKET.
First you’ll need access to hidden files. So change your view settings to make all hidden files visible.
Tools -> folder options -> view (tab) and select the show hidden files and folders.
go to parent drive:/documents and settings/(user name)/send to
Open up my computer and locate your most used folders.
Create a shortcut of the most used folders in SEND TO FOLDER.You can do this in a number of ways.
Right click -> send to desktop(create shortcut) and move the shortcut from the desktop to the SEND TO FOLDER
Copy the most used folder and go to SEND TO FOLDER and right click -> paste shortcut.
Also remember to rename the shortcuts to send to videos or send to potos. We don’t need confusion when we use the same later.
5. DONE
~ c h e e r s! ~
9) How to remove the shortcut arrow from the desktop ?

Double-click 29 and set its data to:
C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,50 (an empty icon)
Close Registry Editor.

-con corresponds to the console
-Lpt1 corresponds to printer and so on....

CON, PRN, AUX, CLOCK$, NUL, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, LPT4, LPT5, LPT6, LPT7, LPT8, and LPT9.
TURN NUMLOCK ON AT LOGON.!!
NumLock does not toggle on by default (system-wide), even if you have it set in your PC's BIOS, because of XP's multi-user functionality. Guess Microsoft doesn't know everyone actually turns it on, which should be reason enough for what acts as "default"...
Anyway, you can hack the Windows Registry to change this behavior, or run a script at logon to turn NumLock on.
1. To enable NumLock through the Registry:
* Open Windows' Registry Editor (START > RUN, type "REGEDIT").
*. Navigate to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
*. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.
2. To enable NumLock using a script, see this MS Knowledgebase article for complete instructions:
CODEhttp://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q262625
Option 1 is the quicker method, but if you have more than one user on your system and one or more don't want NumLock on (stranger things have been known of), then option 2 is the way to go since it allows you to only attach the script to specific users.
REMOVING SERVICES DEPENDENCIES.!!
This will allow you to disable a service or uninstall it from your system without effecting another service that depends on it. Here's how you do it
1. After you have set your services the way you want them and you have disabled/uninstalled something that another services depends on, run "regedit"
2. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\find the service that will not function, do to another service being disabled/uninstall (found in ControlSet001\Services, ControlSet002\Services, and CurrentControlSet\Services)
3. Once you have found the service right-click on the string value, "DependOnService,"and modify
4. You should now see a list of services that it is dependent on. Simply delete the service that you have disabled/uninstalled
5. Restart your computer and your ready to go Disclaimer REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOU REGISTRY FIRST I'm not totaly sure if this will have any negative effects on your system. I used this method after uninstalling "Netbios over Tcpip" from my system completely, so that my Dhcp service would function and I have had NO negative effects on my system.

adding content to Right click credit : ashwin C1
Once done, you will be able to right click any file or folder and use the Browse for Folder dialog to choose the location you want to move or copy your file or folder to, without having to go to the destination path.
First we will add the copy and move options to the right click menu of all FILES.
CLICK Start>Run, type REGEDIT and click OK to open up the registry editor and make your way to this key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->*->shellex->ContextMenuHandlers
Right click the ContextMenuHandlers key and choose New>Key.
Name the new key “Copy To” (without the quotes).
Repeat the above and create another new key named Move To.
You should now have two new subkeys under the ContextMenuHandlers key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->*->shellex->ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT->*->shellex->ContextMenuHandlers\Move To
Select the Copy To key and in the right hand pane, double click “Default”
Enter this clsid value as the value data:
{C2FBB630-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}
Next , select the Move To key and in the right hand pane set the default value to:
{C2FBB631-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}
This now takes care of the Copy and Move options for the right click context menu of all your files.
Now all that is left is to add the same options to the right click menu of all your folders.
The procedure will be the same as for files but at a different key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shellex\ContextMenuHan dlers
Right click ContextMenuHandlers and create a new key named Copy To.
Right click it again and create another new key named Move To.
left click on the right hand pane, add the same default values as you did for Files:
For Copy To:
{C2FBB630-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}
For the Move To:
{C2FBB631-2971-11d1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}
Exit the registry and you are done.
Now when you right click on a file or folder, you should see two new options: Copy to Folder and Move to Folder

Simple way to Speed Up XP Boot-up

Simple way to Speed Up XP Boot-up
One of the main causes of XP booting slowly is the method of loading drivers. Windows versions prior to XP loaded drivers sequentially, but since XP, it has been done concurrently, causing a slowdown.This information is written to the file C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\Layout.ini. While creating this file, XP does a partial defragmentation of the files listed in Layout.ini to make them available in one contiguous area of the hard drive, allowing to load them faster.Various factors adversely affect this defragmentation process, such as a fragmented hard drive, improper defragmentation of the above files by the regular Defragmenter, etc. It is therefore necessary to do this defragmentation manually using a utility from Microsoft known as BootVis, available at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=664. Extract the ZIP file and run BootVis.exe (very preferably after defragmenting your hard disk). The first step in tweaking or troubleshooting your boot process is to run a boot trace. Go to File > New > Next Boot + Drivers Trace. The Trace Repetitions window will prompt you for the number of repetitions (reboots and traces) to run. Let’s go with the defaults; click OK. BootVis Cancel the reboot if you need to save your work, then reboot. After XP reboots, BootVis restarts automatically and provides individual graphs for the system activity areas such as Boot Activity, CPU usage, Disk I/O, Disk utilisation, etc. Armed with this indication of how well the boot process is going, you can optimise the system. Select Trace > Optimize System. Again, BootVis will present you with a 10-second countdown before rebooting. When the system reboots, the BootVis window will appear, indicating that BootVis is using information gained from the previous boot and the current boot to optimise the system. When the next window appears, BootVis places the files specified in the layout.ini file in the area of contiguous disk space created during the defragmentation you did prior to running BootVis. If you have a really old installation of Windows, we’d recommend running the above procedure again or setting BootVis to repeat for two or three times.
How to re-enable CD Autoplay feature in windows XP
Open the Group Policy Editor by typing in gpedit.msc in the Run dialog box. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System and double on Turn Autoplay off in the right pane. The default is “Not configured”. Set it to Disabled. This only works with Windows XP Professional. If you have XP Home Edition, open the Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom. Double-click the DWORD “AutoRun” in the right pane and set its value to 1. Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
DISK BOOT FAILURE: PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
Your problem is essentially a result of faulty power connectors. The fault develops with Molex connectors over a period of time, usually if they are frequently removed from and attached to devices. We advise you get
the power connectors replaced as soon as possible; faulty connectors can lead to hard drive errors and eventually drive failure.
Folder Options under the Tools menu is missing , How to bring back the option?
Open the Group Policy Editor by typing in gpedit.msc in the Run dialog box. Navigate to the following location: User Configuration\Administrative Templates\ Windows Components\WindowsExplorer On the right side, set the “Remove the Folder Options menu item” from the Tools menu to “Not Configured”, by double-clicking it and setting the appropriate option.If you are using Windows XP Home, you will not be able to run the Group Policy Editor, and you will need to use the Registry Editor method, as follows. Open the Registry Editor. Browse to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer Find the NoFolderOptions key and change the value to 0, assuming you have this key. If you don’t, just create it. Restart your computer.

How to create a unique icon for Each drive on Windows XP computer, and run a certain program when double-clicks on them in My Computer.
We can display unique icon for each drive in My Computer by creating an Autorun.inf in the root of the drive. This is exactly the same as in the case of the autorun feature of a CD or DVD.Autorun.inf is an instruction file associated with the Autorun function. A simple autorun.inf file looks like so: [autorun] open=autorun.exe icon=autorun.ico Here, autorun.exe is the executable file that is launched when the CD is inserted, and autorun.ico is the icon file that gives the CD its icon. In case of a disk partition, this file executes when you double-click the drive icon in My Computer. Sometimes an executable file or a DLL that might contain an icon is also used instead of an icon file. You can also try a freeware Autorun file editor such as the one from http://autorun.moonvalley. com if you wish to play around with autorun files.
How to create a password reset disk for XP,and how to use it if you lose your password
How do I create a password reset disk for XP, and how do I use it if I lose my password? Its Common question There’s something called the Forgotten Password Wizard, which allows you to create a password reset disk that can be used to recover password and personalised computer settings if the password is forgotten. The steps to perform the task differ for domain and work-group scenarios. If your computer is on a domain, you can create the Domain Password Reset Disk as follows. Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [Delete] to open the Windows Security dialog box. Click Change Password. Click Backup to open the Forgotten Password Wizard. Click Next, then follow the on-screen instructions. If your computer is not part of a domain, you can create a Non-Domain Password Reset Disk; the procedure here varies depending on whether you have an administrator account or a limited account. If you have an administrator account, create an Administrator Password Reset Disk:open User Accounts in the Control Panel. Select the Administrator. Click Prevent A Forgotten Password under Related Tasks. Follow the instructions in the Forgotten Password Wizard. For a Limited Account Password Reset Disk, do the same, but by selecting the Limited User Account instead of Administrator. Here’s how to use the Password Reset Disk to log on to a computer: boot through the disk you created. Click the username whose password is on the recovery disk. Press [Enter] or the Right Arrow. This causes the “Did You Forget Your Password?” message to appear. You can click the “?” button to see your password hint. If you have forgotten this as well, you can use your Password Reset Disk to reset your password. This will start the Password Reset Wizard. Follow the instructions and you will be able to set a new password. The Password Reset Disk is also automatically updated with the new password information, so you don’t have to create a new password reset disk. Note that the disk you create can only beused with the computer on which it was created.

In the General tab, look for “File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks” and make sure the checkbox next to it is selected. (If it isn’t in the list, go to Install > Services > Add and choose this service to add it.) Now return to the General tab, select “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and click on Properties. Enter an IP address such as “192.168.1.10” and a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 for one computer, and the IP address “192.168.1.11” and the same Subnet Mask for the other. Now, for a particular folder that is to be shared, right-click on it and click on “Sharing and Security”. Enter the share name of the folder and click OK. What is VoIP ,can we call for free through VoIP anywhere in India and abroad?
VoIP stands for Voice Over Internet Protocol. It is a form of telephony that involves the routing of voice calls over an IP-based network (such as the Internet), thus making cheaper call rates possible. There are no providers offering free calls to India, but a few VoIP providers such as Globe7 at www.globe7.com, VoipBuster at www.voipbuster.com, and Gizmogear at www.gizmoproject.com allow you to call free to certain destinations,but only after you pay for a minimum amount of credit. The minimum system requirements usually quoted by VoIP providers is a computer running Windows 2000/XP/Vista with a 300 MHz processor, 128 MB RAM, 10 MB free hard drive space, a full-duplex sound card, a headset, and at least a 64 Kbps Internet connection. You should have no problems with your configuration as far as VoIP is concerned. It does not require any special hardware. All you need to do is download the VoIP software client from the above Web sites, buy credit, and start calling.

Fish aquariums are wonderful for wealth. Choose the active, lively and healthy fishes and make sure that they are strong swimmers. Keep the water clean and aerated. Their constant movement keeps the energy of wealth also on the move.
VastuShastra says if the entrance to your apartment lies at the end of a long corridor, then the energy flowing of a long corridor, then the energy flowing towards it will be too fierce. Adding too much risk to your financial investments. Its effect can be softened with a plant placed halfway down the corridor.

If business is bad, place decorative boulders or curved pathways or pebbles around the structure. This will increase the movement of financial energy.
Are you looking for more clarity in your financial life? Take a look at your windows, mirrors and your glass and crystal items. It's amazing what clean windows can do for the balance sheet. Dirty glass restricts money flow.

Need Increased prosperity? An energy boost? A fountain with the soothing sound of moving water is just the thing for you. Whether on a desk or in an important room, nothing attracts money and reliable luck like a water fountain, running water helps move positive energy through the space. However take care not to direct the water flow towards the exit.

VASTU TIPS

TIPS FOR YOUR HOME
Vastu can fruitfully be applied to the areas of our activities. We should initially concentrate on areas, which affect our life, i.e., where we live and work. We all care about our homes and spend time, effort and money, trying to make them more comfortable. For most of us it represents one of the biggest investments we ever make. Our home (the architecture of our homes) can damage our health, the air we breathe and the water we drink, without our even being aware of it. Similarly, at the places where we work, environmental stresses contribute to overall load, preventing us to reach our full potential. Resisting these external forces becomes more important for growth
and development. Your Prayer Room
1
Room for prayer and meditation is recommended to be in the north-east corner of the house.
2
Deity or image of god should not face the south direction. Ideal positions are such that you face east or west while praying.
Your Staircase
1
Southern or south-western portions of the building are ideal for locating staircase.
2
Do not design staircase of a building in the north-east portion.
3
The steps should climb from east to west or from north to south.
4
If there are landings or turnings in a staircase, it should wind up in the clockwise direction.
5
The number of steps in a staircase should be an odd number so that if you start climbing the steps with the right foot, you will reach the higher floor on the right foot itself.
Number of columns in a building
Columns in a building should be in even numbers.
Columns in the north-east corner should not be circular.
When columns are exposed for architectural purposes, the number of exposed columns also should be even.
VASTU TIPS (Contd..)
Bedroom:- While construction a bed - room, directions should be specially chosen. The directions according to which rooms should be constructed are as under:
North-West
The room in this direction is suitable for guests and girls.
South-West
The Chief of the house should have his room in this direction.
North-East
No bedroom should be situated in this direction. In such situation there is a possibility of increase number of girls in the family
South-East
No bedroom should be located in this direction. The children do not take interest in studies. There is no sound sleep. People have much anger. Decisions are generally taken hurriedly.
West
There is a possibility of birth of larger number of girls in the family.
Bathroom: - It should be in the West and South directions and the flow of its drains should be towards North-East. Commode should be South or West facing. Exhausts fan can be fixed on North and East walls. Geysers should be South-East since it is 'Agneya' corner and Geyser is associated with heat. Toilet: -According to Vastu principles, Toilets and Bathroom should be situated separately. These days, it is not possible because of paucity of space. As such, these are built attached with each other within the house. The following points need special attention for such construction. 1. Never build toilets in the direction of eastern corner or at "Ishan angle". 2. These should be constructed mainly towards South or West. 3. The face should be towards soutrh or West while discharging stool.
Balcony: - It should be constructed in the North-East to achieve good health and wealth and if in the houses already constructed, the balcony is in South-West, it should be covered with glass or screens. Cowshed: - It has been scientifically proved that the cow discharges Methane gas. We exhale carbon dioxide, which is harmful. Methane nullifies the pollution of Carbon dioxide. Therefore cows should be kept in the North-West as far as possible. Children's Room: - The children are future of the nation. If the parents are able to give right direction to the children at their tender age then tomorrow they will turn into disciplined citizens. The children's room, too, should be constructed in the North-West corner but the bathroom should be arranged in above noted direction only. Doors: - The doors should be in the North and East. When someone enters through the door, the waves emerging from the doors affect his mind because the magnetic waves always flow around us. Some painting or window should be opposite each door. Drawing Room: - It should be in North-West, South or west direction. In the traditional drawing rooms mattresses, covered with white sheets of cloth are spread in the entire room and round pillows are kept in South and West walls. Similarly, in the modern drawing room, the furniture should be kept in South and West directions. As far as possible the open space should be maximum in North and East directions. Dining Room: - In olden days the meals were taken in the kitchen itself but now the dining room has become an integral part of the drawing room. However the dining table should be kept in South-East. Delivery Room: - If the delivery of child is to be made in the house, it should be done in North-West rooms.
Entertainment Room: - This is an important place and the suitable directions for it is North-West or South. Food Storage: - The store should be in the kitchen and in the South-East corner. Garages: - It should be in the South-East or North-West corner but load on North and East Walls be kept at the minimum. General Room: -Though, it is sparingly used; yet it should be constructed in the North-West. Guest Room: - It should be in North-West corner.

Diwali or Deepavali

Diwali or Deepavali
The first festival we take up is that of Diwali. Diwali or Deepaavali means an array of lamps (Deep = Lamp, Vali =Array). This is one of the major festivals in the Hindu calendar. It occurs in October/November, and is spread over four days. Dhanteras (Dhanatrayodashi) is the first day or rather the eve of the day on which the festival begins. Narkachaturdashi which is also known as Kalichoudas or Bali Pratipada is the second day. Laxmi Pujan and New year (Padava) normally occur (depending on the Hindu calendar) simultaneously on the third day and Bhaiya-duj is the last day. This is a very popular festival in many parts of India. The celebration of Diwali is marked by the lighting of innumerable lamps in every courtyard and the bursting of crackers. Sweetmeats, new clothes etc., are there as in other festivals. The time for rejoicing is mainly early morning and late night. These hours of darkness bordering the waking hours are preferred as lights and crackers are the highlights of the festivities and these need darkness to have their illuminating effect. Hence people rise early and go late to sleep.
Deepavali - A Harvest Festival?
Worship of the Goddess of Wealth (Laxmi), observance of the New Year and performance of Aarti (a ritual that combines worship and adoration) are a part of the festival On the second day of Deepavaali (Kali Choudas) a ritual that is strongly suggestive of the origin of Deepavaali as an harvest festival is performed. On this day delicacies are prepared from pounded semi-cooked rice (called Poha or Pova). This rice is taken from the fresh harvest available at that time. This custom is prevalent both in rural and urban areas especially in Western India. In rural areas, Diwali signifies only this aspect. As it is Diwali which is celebrated sometime in October/November co-incides with the end of a harvesting season, known as the Kharif season when the fresh crop of rice is available.
Laxmi Pujan - A Veneration of the Prosperity at the end of an Harvest?
And as mentioned earlier in this chapter, the harvest was an important occasion for rejoicing in all agrarian societies. Diwali which occurs at the end of a cropping season has along with the above custom, a few others that re-inforce the hypothesis of its having originated as a harvest. Every harvest normally spelt prosperity. Veneration of this prosperity must have been at the origin of the worship of the Goddess of wealth (Laxmi).

For Farmers, a Festival marking the end of one Harvest and the beginning of another, was a festival heralding the beginning of a New Year.

The association of the New Year (termed) Padava or Padavo, with Diwali also substantiates the harvest festival theory. The end of one harvest and beginning of another meant the end of one cycle of activity and the beginning of another, as all activities in an agrarian economy must have been linked-up largely with agriculture. Hence it was quite natural to look upon a festival that was observed at the end of one harvest season and the beginning of a new one, as a festival heralding the beginning of a new year. Gudi Padava which is also looked upon as a new year in some parts of India (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra) also occurs at the end of another croppping season (the Rabi season) and co-incides with a harvest. This festival comes around March. And finally both the occasions on which the new year is observed are called Padava.

The word Padava is etymologically quite close to the Sanskrit word for crop which is Pradurbhu. Padava might be a corrupted form of the original word for "crop" which was used to term the new year festival. The inference that can be drawn from the above clues is that Diwali as a festival owes its origin to the reaping of a harvest.A Harvest presented a logical occasion for rejoicing and merriment.

The Mythology Associated with Deepavali
Mythology has its own reason to offer for the Diwali festival. According to mythology, the celebration of Diwali is closely bound up with one of India's two classic epics the Ramayana. (Mahabharata being the other epic). In brief the Ramayana story is as follows:

Dashratha, goes on a Hunt and Wounds a Human
Dasharatha the king of Ayodhya had once set off to hunt deer. In the midst of the forest he heard the sound of bubbles and saw some movement in the distance. Thinking it to be a deer drinking water, he shot an arrow in that direction. Much to his surprise, as his arrow found its mark, he heard a human being cry out. When he rushed to the spot his dis-believing eyes saw a handsome youth fatally wounded by his Sad as he was, Dashratha took the dying youth, whose name was Shravana to his (the youth's) blind parents, who were nearby. On hearing from Dashratha, the demise of their only son, they cursed him that he too would find himself in the same agonizing state when his son would be snatched away from him.

Dashratha Grants Three Boons to Kaikeyi
Long after this incident faded away, King Dashratha continued to reign over Ayodhya. One success followed another and with his three wives and four sons, he was a model of happiness. His first wife bore him Rama, the second one Sumitra bore him Laxman and the last one Kaikeyi bore him Bharat and Shatrughna. Each son was nobler than the other. Once during a battle, a wheel of Dashratha's chariot came off, Kaikeyi who had accompanied him to the battle inserted her hand into the axle and held the wheel in place. Her brave gesture enabled Dashratha to win the battle. In return Dashratha granted her three boons and told her to ask for anything she wanted. As she wanted nothing at that moment she reserved the right of asking for their fulfilment for some later date.

The Mythology Associated with Deepavali
Rama Goes in to Exile
This second episode also became a thing of the past. After a few more years when Dashratha's eldest son Rama attained manhood, Dashratha felt it was time up for him to renounce worldly pleasures and relinquish his throne in favour of Rama. On hearing this, the people of Ayodhya were jubilant. But all human minds are not identical. Kaikeyi's maid Manthara was jealous of Rama and to prevent his accession to the throne, she went to Kaikeyi and instigated her against Rama by telling her that if Rama became king, she (Kaikeyi)would lose her importance as queen. So she should ask Bharat (Kaikeyi's son) to be installed aiking and Rama be exiled for fourteen years. And if Dashratha did not accept these demands, Kaikeyi should ask him to redeem the boons that he had granted her. In the beginning Kaikeyi resisted Manthara's malicious advice, but as temptation got the better of sagacity, she relented and Dashratha had to redeem the three boons by:
1. Not making Rama the King of Ayodhya
2. Agreeing to install Bharat on the throne of Ayodhya
3. Asking Rama to into exile for 14 years.

Sadly Dashratha agreed and Rama set off for exile with his wife the virtuous Sita and his noble brother Laxman. Soon afterwards, Dashratha died, a heartbroken man. Not only had Dashratha's boons been redeemed but also the curse of Shravana's broken hearted parents, the occurrence of which had escaped Dashratha's memory.

Rama Battles Ravana
The story of Ramayana does not end here. In exile Sita is abducted by Ravana (King of Rakshashas - Demons) and taken to his abode Lanka (modern day Sri Lanka or Ceylon). Rama and Laxman, collect an army with the help of the monkey king Hanuman (possibly a tribal chief) and rescue Sita.

At the end of fourteen years, Rama, Laxman and Sita return to Ayodhya and are given a hero's welcome by the people. Lord Rama is said to have reigned for a long time during which the people were happy and contented. Ramrajya (the reign of Rama) has come to connote an era of peace and prosperity. The festival of Diwali; we were told is celebrated to commemorate Rama's return from exile. Ramnavami;, another festival is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Rama, sometime in March.

The Mythology Associated with Deepavali
The Legend of King Bali
Another legend is associated with Diwa1i and that is of King Bali. This king, we are told, also had a long and happy reign. To propitiate the gods he performed a Yagna (fire sacrifice). So successful was his Yagna that even the gods were terrified to appear before him and grant him a boon in the fear that what he might ask could be beyond their capacity to satisfy. To avoid embarassment the gods sent one of them to King Bali's court in the guise of a sage. When the Sage reached King bali's court, Bali asked him to ask for anything he wanted. Facing the righteous King, the sage asked for space for three paces. This request seemed strange to all the courtiers, but king Bali granted it. Once the request was granted to him, the wily Sage, who was none but god in disguise, submerged the entire world (Mrityu-loka) with one step, with the second he submerged heaven (Swarga-loka) and for the third step; there was no respectable place to put his foot down and so he asked the bewildered Bali for some respectable place to this foot so that the boon could be fulfilled. Left with no alternative, the noble but exasperated King Bali offered his head for the purpose. To his surprise, the wily sage not only lost no time in placing his foot over King Bali's head, but also thrust Bali into the nether worlds (Patala-loka) which as per Hindu cosmogony is hell and lies below the surface of the earth.

In memory of this, we are told, that the second day of Diwali (Bali Prati-pada) is celebrated. Prati-pada here translates as "below the opponent's foot" (Prati=opponent, Pada=foot).

The Mythology Associated with Deepavali
The Legend of Demon Narakasura
The Third mythology associated with the celebration of Deepavali is that of the slaying of the Demon Narakasura by Lord Sri Krishna. In Western and Southern India on Naraka-chaturdashi day during Deepavali, to re-enact the slaying of the demon Narakasura by Lord Sri Krishna, Hindus smash a bitter fruit (called Kaarita) with their big toe. This is done after having a ceremonial bath in which sandalwood paste and sweet smelling essences are used.

But this mythology and ritual is associated with Deepavali only in the Western and Southern India, it is not known in the north and east. Bharatvarsha with its multifarious and colourful legends has many festivals with which different mythologies have become associated. These mythologies differ from region to region and have contributed in making the composite and colourful society of the Hindus.

Diwali : Festival of Lights

Diwali:Festival ofLights

DiwaliThe best-known of the Hindu festivals, Diwali is celebrated throughout India, at the New Moon on the fifteenth day of the month Kartika, or Ashwin (october/november), as well as in Indian communities throughout the world. It is known as the "festival of lights", for people traditionally light small oil lamps (called diyas) and place them around the home, in courtyards, verandahs and gardens, as well as on roof-tops and outer walls. A harvest festival and a celebration of the Lunar New Year, Diwali has strong astrological energies, like similar festivals the world over.

The celebration of Diwali happens this year on November 12, 2004. It always features the exchange of sweets and the enjoyment of fireworks, but basically, this is a seasonal, astrological festival marking the transition from the old lunar year to the new in Hindu India. Diwali (from the sanskrit: deepaavali, meaning "a garland of lamps"), is the perfect description of this marvellous Indian festival of lights. In North India, the lamps are lit to remind us of Lord Rama's return from fourteen years in exile to his kingdom of Ayodhya after conquering the tyrant Ravana, who had abducted his wife Sita and held her in his island fortress of Lanka.
Rama's heroic deeds are set out in the Hindu epic Ramayana and Diwali celebrates the victory of virtue over vice. In the story, Rama, the rightful heir to the throne of Ayodhya, accepts an exile in the forest due to his father's vow to his scheming stepmother. He is accompanied in his exile by his lovely Sita and his brother Laksmana. Ramayana is the story of his conquest of evil with the aid of Hanuman, the monkey king, and the undying love of Sita.
Different Meanings, but the Same Festivities

As with other Indian festivals, Diwali signifies many different things to people across the country. In North India, Diwali celebrates Rama's homecoming, his return to Ayodhya after the defeat of Ravana and his coronation as king; in Gujarat, the festival honours Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth; and in Bengal, it is associated with the goddess Kali.
For Jains, the day commemorates the passing into Nirvana of Mahavira, the most recent of the Jain Tirthankaras, or saints. The lighting of the lamps is explained as a material substitute for the light of holy knowledge that was extinguished with Mahavira's passing.
Everywhere, it signifies the renewal of life, and so it is the done thing to wear new clothes on the day of the festival. It seems to have begun as a harvest festival, yet, as the beginning of the lunar New Year, it heralds the approach of winter and the beginning of a new sowing season.
Five Day Festival

Diwali is a five day festival, beginning on the 15th day of the Hindu calendar month of Kartika (Ashwin). By the Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls in October or November; in 2004, it happens on November 12. Gifts are exchanged and festive meals are prepared during Diwali, and the celebration means as much to Hindus as Christmas does to Christians.
Diwali marks the beginning of the Hindu and Gujarati New Year and is celebrated with the lighting of lamps and candles, and lots of fireworks. It is time to replenish wardrobes with new clothes and exchange gifts (often clothes) and sweets with friends and neighbours.
First Day – Dhanteras

Because there are many regions in India, there are many manifestations of the Diwali festival. The festival begins with Dhanteras, a day set aside to worship the goddess of prosperity, Shri Lakshmi. Lustrous Lakshmi is the consort of Vishnu, and her statue is found in every home. On this day, homes are thoroughly cleaned and windows are opened to welcome her blessing for the new year.
In rural villages cattles are adorned and worshipped by farmers, and in the South of India, cows are offered special veneration as the incarnation of the goddess. Candles and lamps are lit to serve as as a greeting to Lakshmi. In Indian culture, wealth is not viewed as a corruptive power. Instead, a wealthy person is considered to have been rewarded for the good deeds of a past life. On this day, people exchange gifts and purchase new items for the house, as this is considered auspicious and ensures happiness and prosperity for the whole of the coming year. Business men (marwaldi) pray for prosperity on this day to Lakshmi, because it is believed to give the best results for the year ahead.
Second Day – Kali Chaudas

On the second day Kali, the goddess of Strength, is worshipped. Delicacies are prepared from pounded partly-cooked rice (called Poha or Pauva) from the recent harvest. This custom is held in rural and in urban areas, especially in Western India. Diwali celebrates the end of the harvest season, known as the Kharif season when the fresh crop of rice is in, but also marks the beginning of the new season. This day (Kali Choudas) also focuses on abolishing laziness and evil. North Indians call it Narak Chaudas and will pray for the souls of departed loved ones.
Third Day – Diwali

On the third and most important day (the last day of the year in the lunar calendar), lamps are lighted and shine brightly in every home. The lamp shining at the dark of the New Moon symbolizes knowledge and encourages reflection upon the purpose of each day in the festival. The goal is to remember the purpose throughout the coming year. Lakshmi Puja is performed on this day, awakening an appreciation of prosperity and a sense of responsibility towards it. Lakshmi, always depicted as a very beautiful woman, stands on a lotus. She has lotuses in various stages of bloom in her two hands and wears a lotus garland.
Cascades of gold coins are usually shown flowing from her hands, suggesting that those who worship her gain wealth. She always wears gold-embroidered red clothes. Red symbolizes activity and the golden lining indicates prosperity. Lakshmi is the active energy of Vishnu, and also appears as Lakshmi-Narayan – Lakshmi accompanying Vishnu.
Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and Ganesha is the Lord of Happiness. Lakshmi and Ganesha Puja is performed for prosperity, material abundance, and spiritual prosperity. The faithful believe that the worship of Lakshmi should not be neglected, lest poverty and suffering fall upon those who fail to remember her. This Puja is performed in the evening, as the Taurus ascendant and the Leo ascendant are considered the best for keeping the material benefits for the year. At this time, old business accounts are settled and new books are opened. The books are worshipped in a special ceremony and participants are encouraged to remove anger, hate, and jealousy from their lives.
Fourth Day — Vishkarma

The fourth day of Diwali falls on the first day of the lunar New Year and is called Vishkarma Day. Also known as Padwa or VarshaPratipada it marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya. Families celebrate the new year by dressing in new clothes, wearing jewellery and visiting family members and business colleagues bearing sweets, dried fruits and other gifts. This day is often used by manufacturers to pray for their equipment so that it works well and makes profit during the year ahead.
In ancient times, the people of Gokul would celebrate a festival in honour of Lord Indra, worshipping him at the end of each monsoon season. However, in one particular year, the young Krishna halted the custom of offering prayers to Indra, who in a fit of anger poured down a deluge in order to destroy Gokul. Krishna saved Gokul by lifting up a mountain called Govardhan and holding it over the people as an umbrella. So, on this day, Goverdhan Puja is performed to commemorate this act of Sri Krishna.
This day is also observed as Annakoot and prayers are offered in the temples. In Mathura and Nathadwara, the deities are bathed in milk, then dressed in shining attire, featuring ornaments of diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones.
Fifth Day

On the final day (Balipratipada) of the festival, Bali, a powerful titanic figure in Indian Mythology, is recalled. Bali was the powerful demon-king of Paataala (the netherworld), who had boldly extended his kingdom over the earth as well. On the day, Sri Vishnnu, taking the form of Vaamana, a dwarfish Brahmin, approached Bali requesting a boon, comprising the amount of space equal to three of his steps. Bali, famed for his generosity, granted the boon. However, the "dwarf" then grew into a gigantic form and with one step covered the entire earth; with the second, he covered the sky, and then asked Bali where he should place his third step. Bali, left with no other choice, presented his own head. Sri Vishnu placed his foot on Bali's head, pushing him back down to the netherworld, the rightful territory of Bali's reign. However, Bali prayed that he might be permitted to visit the earth once a year. Then it was the turn of Vishnu to grant the boon. Thus, the focus of this day is to see the good in others, including enemies. It is particularly reverenced in Kerala.
The second day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksh) of Kartika is also called Bhaiya-Duj. In the Vedic era, Lord Yama (Yamraj, the Lord of Death) visited his sister Yamuna (Yami), who marked the auspicious Tilak on his forehead. They ate and talked together, enjoying each other's company, exchanging special gifts as a token of their love for each other. Yamraj pronounced that anyone who receives the Tilak from his sister on this day is truly blessed. Since that time the custom has been for brothers to visit their sisters to celebrate Bhaiyaduj. The 'Teeka' is applied on the brother's forehead, but it is a day dedicated to sisters. Raksha Bandhan may be "brothers' day", but this is "sisters' day".
Many Myths Surround Diwali

Another myth traces the origins of the festival to the annual "inspection tours" of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth and prosperity. The faithful believe that on this day Lakshmi goes around visiting her devotees and sets up residence in the house she finds best spruced up and most hospitable. Diwali is an occasion for spring cleaning, painting the walls, decorating the floor with attractive designs wrought in coloured powder, or paste made with rice.
The slaying by Krishna of the demon lord Narakasura after a long march from Dvaraka (Gujarat) in the West to Pragjyotishapura (Assam) in the East and the overcoming by Rama of the demon king Ravana in Lanka in the South and his triumphant march back to Ayodhya in the North is held to represent the unification of the four corners of the land of Bharata Varsha (North, South, East and West) through the triumph of good over evil. This is said to be the source of the underlying joy that surfaces at this festival.
The chief ritual traditionally associated with Diwali is gambling. Friends get together to indulge in games of chance, dice or cards. The "addicts" seek legitimacy for their pastime by referring to the celestial game of dice played by the great lord Shiva with his companion Parvati - a scene superbly sculpted at Kailash temple, Ellora. Others rationalise that this is just to remind oneself of the fickleness of lady luck and to inculcate a sense of balance in our pursuit of material success.
At Diwali, the children can be seen bursting firecrackers and lighting candles or earthen lamps. This is a time of exchanging sweets with neighbours and friends. Puffed rice and sugar candy are the favourites.
